A 14 month contract to replace the hot and cold galvanized pipe water services with copper pipe, whilst maintaining supplies to the entire building. The pipework ran from the main plant room, through ‘miles’ of undercroft, across roofs and finally into a 7 storey surgical and ward block containing some 500 beds. Lagging had to be removed from the 8″ raw, boosted and treated water services running in the ducts utilizing supply and extract air services, due to dust. Within the building plant room 3 large steel steam generated hot water calorifiers had to be cut out in phases and replaced with PHEs and new pumps.
Lateral and riser services were run in ducts and ceiling voids with considerable building work by our own teams required for inserting hatches, fitting new ceilings and decorating etc. The planning and liaison processes were one of the most sensitive we have ever undertaken, requiring ‘hourly’ updates and being ready to accommodate medical needs at short notice. Quite often 24 hour working programmes had to be deployed to achieve these tasks.
