The Norwood School Crown Dale, London, SE19 3NY London Borough of Lambeth Trevor Childs, Fredrick Snow & Partners 1st October 2008 17th April 2009 £ 232,921 |
Norwood School works consisted of the replacement of defective pipework, fittings, valves, expansion bellows and bracket ranging from 15mm - 150mm within the district distribution scheme running in ducts from the main plant room, connecting and serving the schools modern design.
This job required careful management and time efficiency. On site at the same time as us, asbestos was being cleared ahead of our works and therefore all surveys were unable to be carried out by ourselves and the consultant. When access became available we commenced our works, which had to be phased over the term to enable the full use of the school. This was very successful. Unfortunately we also discovered a problem with the red oxide paint of hot water pipes causing the production of toxic fumes. A strict health and safety method statement was implemented involving breathing protection and ventilation air being forced in and out of the ducts.
The discovery of completely rotten pipework meant a lot of fabrication and longer hours out of school time, to insure these could be replaced without causing disruption to the school. Once all new installations were in place and tested, follow on insulation was applied.
Throughout this project not one school day was lost or access denied. The project was successfully completed within the 6 months programme.

A very complicated installation to de-centralise the existing steam generating plant that required detailed complex planning to retain all existing heating, hot & cold water and gas services to this bed hospital that incorporates a day-care centre.
This involved the creation of 3 large independent LTHW plant rooms comprising of modular boilers and new flues, associated control panels linked to BMS, pumps, motorised valves etc.
The work was further complicated by asbestos removal and the fact that a number of services were almost untraceable. Before any removal, adaptation or interception could take place numerous investigative exercises had to be carried out to avoid inadvertent disruptions to the hospitals operations and careful programming where this was unavoidable.
In support of our works we had 3 large portable gas boilers and freezer based lorries working throughout this process. The entire contract was completed within 15 weeks.

A tricky task to remove 4 existing 100mm heating circulation pumps and replace with new dual sets including their isolation valves, electrical supplies and BMS connections.
The centre operates 7 days a week and our only window was from 23:00 - 06:00 hrs. A major task was to insert new isolation valves onto a 200mm common mains so that we could work away from the mains onto individual pump sets.
Working with our appointed freezer partner we had to monitor the rate of temperature decrease in these mains from 23:00 hrs so that they could calculate the freeze and actual operating time for us to weld the flanges and install the valves, before returning the system back to operation before the 06:00 hrs start up.
Although complicated, the work was completed without any disruption to the centre, which is one of the largest in Europe.
